During the journey, the presence of Naraku, a spider half-demon who set the trap for Inuyasha and Kikyo 50 years ago, comes to light. Inuyasha aids Kagome in collecting the shards and dealing with the threats they come across. Inuyasha obtains his father's sword Tessaiga, which places him at odds with his older half-brother Sesshomaru, who is a powerful demon who seeks Tessaiga for himself. The Shikon Jewel is later taken by a crow demon, which Kagome destroys with an arrow, but in doing so, it inadvertently shatters the jewel into many shards that scatter across Japan and into the possession of various demons and humans. When Inuyasha turns on her and tries to steal the Shikon Jewel again, Kikyo's now-elderly sister Kaede subdues him with a magical beaded necklace to keep him in line with Kagome saying "sit" or "sit boy", which causes him to violently fall to the ground. The Shikon Jewel manifests from within the body of Kagome, who is Kikyo's reincarnation, and she desperately frees Inuyasha from the tree to slay the centipede demon. Kagome travels back in time to the Sengoku period in 1546, 50 years after the battle between Inuyasha and Kikyo.
